Fraline Tomas looked out the floor to ceiling glass windows of her office as she contemplated the call she had to make. She absolutely hated talking to Harper Wentley the chairman of the board. His family owned the company. In her personal opinion he was a chauvinistic bastard that was a scandal waiting to happen.

She had worked so hard to get to this point in her financial career. But instead of feeling proud of her accomplishments, she was quite nervous. She had a very unsettling feeling about the company’s impending merger. It just seemed so rushed and she wasn’t sure all the regulations were being followed.

She didn’t trust Harper and she wasn’t going to take the rap for any illegal activities that were taking place. She decided to start taping her phone conversations with Harper. She had heard some unsettling things and wanted to protect herself.

He had been calling her office all morning and she had put off returning his call for as long as she could. She dialed his number, he answered on the second ring.

“Harper Wentley.” Came the clipped tone.

“Hi, Mr. Wentley, Fraline Tomas here. How are you doing today?” She asked with feigned politeness.

“I am well, do you have any news for me?” He asked impatiently. She gritted her teeth as she held back what she really wanted to say to him.

“Well the analyst speculation surrounding our stock price has certainly increased the price. It is now at fourteen dollars per share which is two dollars higher than when it closed on Friday.” She replied. She really hoped that he was pleased because he was like a fire breathing dragon when he wanted something done.

“This is marvelous. I may still get out of this sale unscathed.” He replied pompously. “When my father and grandfather built this company, we never dreamt this would be its demise.”

“Now sir, the analyst reports have misinformation because we lost the bids with Go-Link, Milli-Tech and Savitech which had proposed to buy our shares at up to three dollars above the share price. The only bid we currently have on the table is Kaine Technologies which is only offering us ten dollars per share. That’s at least four dollars below what the analysts are reporting.” She stated with concern. This did not feel right. He was trying to dump the company’s stock from his investment portfolio based on the inflated stock price.

“Ms. Tomas, I’m sure you are well aware that the information is in the public domain. It is not our job to police the analysts. I’m sure the reasonable prudent investor in the marketplace would no doubt sell their shares and try to make a profit. He replied in his nauseatingly over confident tone.

“With all due respect Mr. Wentley you are not the reasonable prudent investor. You are getting the information from me the C.F.O who’s telling you the price in the market is wrong. And you are trying to sell your shares and make a profit based on the inaccurate information.” She said exasperated from trying to explain something she was sure he should have known.
